When I took the role in the pilot, my agents said, “Give us a break. This is AMC. This is never going to go. Who watches period pieces?” And I said, “We all thought the others were all going to be huge hits, and they weren’t. So what do we know? Let’s do the one that’s great.” And so I shot the pilot, and then they dropped me. It’s funny now, but at the time I was humiliated. I mean, I had never been dropped from an agency.
